My name is James Smith. I along with team mates of Charlie Company’s team Three Charlie One dedicate this site to our comrades, the brave Marines and Navy Corpsman that served with Third Reconnaissance Battalion Third Marine Division as well as Third Force Recon company from 1965 to 1969 during the Vietnam war. With operations starting in south Vietnam in May 1965, long range Marine reconnaissance patrolling was important to the welfare of the 3rd Marine Division. As the eyes and ears of the division it was the job of small teams of four to eight Recon Marines to seek out and find enemy units reporting information critical about the North Vietnamese army. One year prior to my arriving in Vietnam, the war was in full swing and Third Reconnaissance Battalion Third Marine Division had operations well underway in the war. On November 21, 1966 Charlie and Delta companies were moved to Dong Ha, while Alpha, Bravo and two platoons of Force recon remained to the south in the Hue/ Phu Bai area. The following were some of the missions carried out by Marine Recon and team Three Charlie One during that time period. Also included is information of over (thirty five) recon missions carried out by various recon teams from all the companies within the battalion.
